The role of the body is often overlooked in the practice of meditation, but the cost of this oversight is often a great deal of frustration, physical tension, and pain. By working to establish what I call "the posture of meditation," the practice becomes much easier to access and surrender to.
During this retreat we will focus on the three primary elements that combine to create the posture of meditation: alignment (the upright vertical spine), relaxation (surrendering the weight of the body to gravity), and resilience (the understanding that everything subtly moves).
Through establishing these three structural principles, we will turn our attention to a line of instruction from the Satipatthana Sutta in which the Buddha tells us: "as you breathe in, breathe in through the whole body; as you breathe out, breathe out through the whole body." As a foil to long hours of sitting, we will also explore walking and movement practices, as well as periods of deep, self massage.
