The Posture of Meditation

By working with relaxation, alignment and resilience, we can establish the posture of mediation, which allows our practice to become easier to access and surrender to.

The role of the body is often overlooked in the practice of meditation, but the cost of this oversight is often a great deal of frustration, physical tension, and pain.  By working to establish what I call "the posture of meditation," the practice becomes much easier to access and surrender to.

During this retreat we will focus on the three primary elements that combine to create the posture of meditation:  alignment (the upright vertical spine), relaxation (surrendering the weight of the body to gravity), and resilience (the understanding that everything subtly moves).

Through establishing these three structural principles, we will turn our attention to a line of instruction from the Satipatthana Sutta in which the Buddha tells us:  "as you breathe in, breathe in through the whole body; as you breathe out, breathe out through the whole body."  As a foil to long hours of sitting, we will also explore walking and movement practices, as well as periods of deep, self massage.

Will Johnson received his B.A., magna cum laude, in Art and Archaeology from Princeton
University in 1968. He became a Buddhist practitioner in 1972 and was trained as a Rolfer in1976. He began the formal sharing of the practices of Embodiment Training in 1995. He is theauthor of several books including: Balance of Body, Balance of Mind, The Posture of Meditation ,Aligned, Relaxed, Resilient: The Physical Foundations of Mindfulness
